Read Lois Ann Yamanaka’s “Obituary.” Post an exploratory analysis of the use of dialect in Yamanaka as #16. (Worksheet 6.1)
For 12/5 Chafe “Integration and Involvement” and Tannen, “Imagining Worlds.” Post a brief proposal for your unit 2 paper as #20. I'll use these to set up working groups for Thursday

Bring in copies of a text you'll work with in your final project. You'll work in small groups to discuss your proposed projects and the analytical approaches you're taking to it. Add to your posted proposal after class.

You've already created a simple 3rd person narrative from your conversational data. Now, working from that situation, create a story, exploring a theme or conflict and bringing out the motivations of the characters. You may choose to include some dialogue, and you can put new words in the mouths of the characters. (Alternatively, you can try recasting a segment of "Girl.") We'll work with your posted stories as we discuss Toolan in class on 10/12.

Scoring rubric for informal assignments
Unit 1 Project (Proposal due 10/3; project due 10/24) . To get full credit for this project you must
a. post a small example of one of the texts you're studying before class on 10/24 and report to the class on what you've learned in working with it on that day (#10)
b. turn in a reasonable draft of your paper on 10/24, even if you feel it needs more work. You may add a cover note about any difficulties you're having and any specific help or feedback you'd like from me.
