We'll work with several language readings this week. I'd like you to start with Chapter 7 of L&L (up to the section that discusses "The River") and either Chafe plus a small portion of Chapter 11, or Tannen
a. Listen to Breeze/Powerpoint intro
b. Read L&L Ch. 7 and listen to the small exerpt of conversation from Karen, Melanie and Shanna, Playing Around"
c. Read Chafe, "Integration and Involvement" on Electronic Reserve and the few pages in the middle of Chapter 11 in I draw on Chafe to discuss Reading Chafe
Karen's spoken and written versions of a paper she was working on for 9th grade English
d. Read Tannen, "Imagery and Details"
e. Post to language concepts discussion and respond to two other posts.
12.2 Analyzing Style in Texts
Agenda
a. Decide on a topic in this week's study of style that has captured your attention--issues of style and cross-cultural communication, the communicative styles of men and women, school style and oppositional culture, the characteristic styles of spokena and written texts, or the ways in which various aspects of style are represented in or affect our reading of literature.
b. Choose any text--the original conversation you recorded, a piece of your own writing or of student writing, a passage from any piece of literature, and analyze it, working with one of the worksheets posted below. (Worksheets on analyzing communicative style, spoken and written language, and details and involvement will be posted.)
c. Post your understandings to the discussion and respond to two other posts.
