Weeks 5-6: Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" & The Awakening. Post Q&C # 2. Weeks 2-4: Henry James's The Portrait of A Lady. Post Q&C by Monday, 9/24 at the latest.
A study of significant works of American fiction written in the first half of the 20th century. Major American modernists -- James, Wharton, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, Hurston and others -- will be discussed. Such writers define the "American century" and demonstrate the sustained achievement of modern American fiction.
