Week 5: Continue discussion of Incidents in the Life of A Slave Girl. Post Q&C 2. Week 4: Complete discussion of The Scarlet Letter & begin discussion of Incidents in the Life of A Slave Girl. Week 3: Continue reading The Scarlet Letter. Post a Q&C. Post a picture. Topics for Paper #1 in "Assignments." Weeks 1-2: Please familiarize yourself with the class website. (See instructions in "Resources.") Be sure the entry for your name is correct in "Student Profiles." (If you wish to use a different email address, please send me an email, at shaun.oconnell@umb.edu, telling me what it is and I will change your entry.) Go to "Writing Room" and make a brief entry (call it "Profile"), telling me and the rest of the class something about yourself. (You may also post a picture.) Then check under "Student Profiles" or "Class Portfolio" to be sure your entry is there. (If it is not, please let me know. Students who have had classes with me before may find that their entry for this class gets sent to one of our previous classes. We will be discussing Walt Whitman's poetry during the first week -- see selections in "Resources" and Six American Poets -- and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter in weeks 2 & 3. EN 206: Six American Authors This course examines an American sense of identity, vision and style through readings of some of the nation's best known and lesser known writers. Emphasis on the American sense of identity, style, values and place. Fiction and autobiography by Harriet Jacobs, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Jacobs, Stephen Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Z.N. Hurston. Poetry by Walt Whitman, Robert Frost and Langston Hughes.
